On March 3, while apprehending a person who had committed several felonies and was fleeing, K9 Dax was injured, which resulted in temporary paralysis to his hindquarters. K9 Dax went through intensive physical therapy following the injury, however his team of veterinarians determined that for his physical wellbeing, Dax would not be able to return to active duty.

K9 Dax was officially retired from service in March 2024. On April 10, the community gathered to celebrate his dedicated service to the people of Lake County and retirement. His health, unfortunately, continued deteriorating. K9 Dax passed away on April 12, 2024.

In May, State Representative Tom Weber and the Illinois House of Representatives honored the service K9 Dax and his handler, Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy John Forlenza. Dax and Deputy Forlenza were honored with the adoption of House Resolution 703, and Forlenza was at the Capitol to be recognized.
