Rep. Weber Calls for Relief from Oppressive Property Taxes

Speaking on the House Floor and calling for action to provide relief from oppressive property taxes, State Representative Tom Weber invoked a piece of history and the story of a young family in his district whose property taxes have ballooned to nearly as much as their monthly mortgage.

Weber again called on the General Assembly to take serious action, suggesting that the crushing nature of Illinois property taxes is un-American and killing the American Dream for young families trying to make ends meet.

House Republicans have continued to put forth legislation to overhaul and provide relief to Illinois’ property tax system. The most recent package of bills includes:

  • HB 9 (Ugaste) – Provides direct property tax relief to homeowners by creating the Fixed Pension Property Tax Relief Plan. (Estimated at $3.5 billion in state property tax relief for 2026 alone.)
  • HB 5611HB 5612 (Weaver) – Provides property tax relief by reinvesting funds from paid bonds.
  • HB 2543 (Sosnowski) – Taxpayer Empowerment, forces taxing bodies to ask voters for approval.
  • HB 1024 (Cabello) – Mandates sunsets for tax referenda, adds transparency.
  • HB 5550 (Fritts) – Truth in Taxation (increases notice for tax increases).
