SPRINGFIELD – As the Illinois House of Representatives holds a special session in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, State Representative Tom Weber (R-Lake Villa) has filed legislation to provide property tax relief for disabled veterans and senior citizens. To help protect the health and safety of those at greater risk of coronavirus, House Bill 5793 allows those who have been granted the disabled veteran or senior homestead exemption in previous years to receive the exemption this year without needing to reapply.
“Now, more than ever, our seniors and those who have served our country shouldn’t need to worry about reapplying for property tax relief they are already entitled to receive,” said Weber. “This is common-sense legislation and I hope my colleagues on both sides of the aisle will help get his bill over the line before we leave Springfield.”
Under the HB 5793, county boards will have the ability to pass a resolution removing the reapplication requirement for veterans with disabilities or senior citizens to receive their assessment freeze homestead exemption. This is already common practice for the general homestead exemption granted to all homeowners. Weber’s legislation not only removes the reapplication process for this year, but in future years as well.
